What Is Web Hosting? A Beginner's Guide

Web hosting is the service that keeps your website online. Every page, image and file of a site has to live on a computer that is connected to the internet all day. That computer is called a server, and renting space on it is what we call web hosting. Without hosting, a website is just files on your laptop that nobody else can open.

This guide explains how hosting works, which types exist and how to choose one for your first project. No technical background is needed.

How web hosting works

When someone types your address into a browser, three things happen in less than a second:

  1. The browser asks the domain name system (DNS) where your domain points.
  2. DNS answers with the address of the server that hosts your site.
  3. The browser connects to that server and downloads your pages.

So a website needs two separate things. The domain name is the address people type, such as yourbusiness.com. The hosting is the place where the files are stored. Think of the domain as your street address and the hosting as the house itself. We explain the link between the two in Nameservers vs DNS Records.

What a hosting plan includes

A hosting plan is more than disk space. A typical plan gives you:

  • Storage for your files, images and databases. SSD storage is now the norm because it reads data much faster than old hard disks.
  • Bandwidth, which is the data your visitors download.
  • A control panel such as cPanel, where you manage files, e-mail and databases without typing commands.
  • E-mail accounts on your own domain, like [email protected].
  • An SSL certificate, so your site loads over HTTPS and browsers show it as secure.
  • Databases such as MySQL, which apps like WordPress need.
  • Backups and security tools that help you recover from mistakes or attacks.

The main types of web hosting

Hosting types differ in how many sites share one server and how much control you get.

Shared hosting

Many websites share the resources of one powerful server. It is the most affordable option and the easiest to manage, which makes it the usual starting point. Our article Shared Hosting Explained covers its strengths and limits in detail.

WordPress hosting

This is shared or cloud hosting tuned for WordPress. WordPress comes pre-installed and the plan adds tools for updates and speed.

Cloud hosting

Your site gets its own share of CPU and memory, so a busy neighbour does not slow you down. It suits growing shops and busy sites.

VPS hosting

A virtual private server is a private slice of a server with full root access. You install and manage what you want. It needs more technical skill.

Dedicated servers

A whole physical machine for one customer. It is meant for large projects with heavy traffic or special requirements.

Which web hosting do you need?

Start with the size of your project, not with the biggest plan. A blog, a portfolio or a company site with a few pages runs well on shared hosting. A site built on WordPress gains from WordPress hosting. An online store with steady traffic is a good fit for cloud hosting. Choose a VPS only when you need full control of the server or software that shared plans do not allow.

You can move up later. A good host lets you upgrade a plan without rebuilding your site. If you are still unsure, read our guide on how to choose web hosting.

Web hosting and your domain name

You need both, and they can come from the same company or from two different ones. Buying them together makes setup easier, because the domain already points to the right server. If you already own a domain elsewhere, you only change its nameservers to connect it. Tips for picking a good name are in How to Choose a Domain Name Customers Remember.

Frequently asked questions

Can I host a website on my own computer?

Technically yes, but it is not practical. Your computer would have to stay on all the time, with a fixed address and strong security. A hosting company handles power, network, security and backups for you.

Do I need technical skills to manage a hosting account?

Not for shared or WordPress hosting. The control panel and one-click installers do the hard work. A VPS is different, because you manage the server yourself.

Is free web hosting a good idea?

It can work for a test, but it usually comes with ads, low limits and no custom domain. We compare both sides in Free Web Hosting or Paid Hosting?

Can I change hosts later?

Yes. You can upgrade inside the same company or move to another one. A careful move causes no downtime, as our website migration guide shows.
