Checklist for comparing web hosting plans

To choose web hosting well, look past the headline price. Two plans that look the same on a sales page can behave very differently once your site is live. The right host keeps your site fast and safe, and helps you quickly when something breaks.

Use the nine checks below before you pay. They work for a first blog as well as for a company site.

1. Know what your website needs

Write down what you are building. A personal blog, a company site and an online store have very different needs. Estimate your visitors per month, the number of sites you will host and whether you use WordPress. This short list stops you from paying for power you will not use, or from picking a plan that is too small.

2. Pick the right hosting type

Most new sites start on shared hosting. WordPress sites gain from WordPress hosting. Busy stores and apps fit cloud hosting, while developers who need full control choose a VPS. If these words are new to you, read What Is Web Hosting? first.

3. Check storage type and resources

SSD storage is much faster than old hard disks, and NVMe SSD is faster still. Look at the CPU and memory limits too, not only the disk size. Many hosts list "unlimited" features, so read what the limits really are.

4. Look at security features

A free SSL certificate should be standard today. Also look for backups, malware scanning and accounts that are isolated from each other. Security problems cost far more than the hosting itself. Our backup strategy guide explains why you still need your own copies.

5. Test the support before you need it

Support matters most on a bad day. Check which channels exist: live chat, e-mail or tickets. Check the languages too. If your customers or your team speak Arabic or French, support in that language saves time. Ask a simple question before you buy and see how fast and how clearly the host answers.

6. Consider the server location

Data travels faster over a shorter distance. A server close to your main visitors loads pages a little faster. Some sectors also have legal rules about where data may be stored. We cover both points in Choosing a Server Location.

7. Compare the renewal price, not only the first price

Many hosts offer a low price for the first term and charge more when the plan renews. That is normal, but you should know the renewal price before you choose web hosting. Check the billing period too: yearly billing is usually cheaper per month than monthly billing.

8. Read the refund and cancellation rules

A money-back period lets you test the service with less risk. Read the exact rules. Domain names are usually not refundable, because the registry is paid at once. Check how to cancel and whether automatic renewal can be turned off.

9. Make sure you can grow and move

Your site will change. Check that you can upgrade without rebuilding, and that you can download full backups of your files and databases. A free migration service is a good sign, because it shows the host expects you to arrive with an existing site.

How HostiGuard answers these checks

Our hosting plans use SSD storage, and our VPS plans use NVMe SSD. Plans include free SSL certificates and cPanel. Support works by live chat, e-mail and tickets in English, Arabic and French. Our servers are in the Netherlands and Canada.

New hosting plans have a 14-day money-back period under our Refund Policy. Promotional prices apply to the first term, and renewals are charged at the plan's regular price, as our Billing & Renewal Policy explains. If you already have a site, we can migrate it for free.

Frequently asked questions

Is the cheapest hosting a bad choice?

Not always. A low price is fine for a small site, as long as the limits, the renewal price and the support suit you. Problems start when the low price hides missing features.

How much storage does a small website need?

Much less than most people think. A company site with a few dozen pages and images fits in a few gigabytes. Images and backups grow fastest, so compress your pictures.

Should I buy hosting for several years?

A longer term often lowers the price per month. If you are new to a host, start with a shorter term or use the money-back period to test it first.
