Steps to build a website from domain to launch

You can make a website in a single afternoon, even without coding skills. The work follows the same order every time: a name, a home for the files, the software, then your content. This guide walks you through each step and links to deeper guides where you need them.

Step 1: Decide what the website is for

Write one sentence about the goal of your site. "Show my services and get calls" is a different site from "sell products online". The goal decides the pages you need, the tools you install and the hosting you choose. List five to seven main pages, for example Home, About, Services, Prices and Contact.

Step 2: Choose and register a domain name

The domain is your address on the internet, like yourbusiness.com. Keep it short, easy to spell and close to your brand. Check that it is free, then register it. Pick the extension with care: .com is known everywhere, while a country extension shows local presence. Our guide on choosing a domain name has more tips.

Step 3: Get web hosting

Hosting is the server that stores your site and shows it to visitors. For a first site, shared hosting or WordPress hosting is enough. If you are not sure what hosting is, read What Is Web Hosting? before you buy.

Step 4: Connect the domain to the hosting

If you bought the domain and the hosting from the same company, this is usually done for you. If the domain is somewhere else, change its nameservers to the ones your host gives you. The change can take a few hours to reach everyone. Nameservers vs DNS Records explains what happens in the background.

Step 5: Install WordPress or a site builder

Most people make a website with WordPress today. In cPanel, open the one-click installer, choose WordPress, pick your domain and set an admin password. In a few minutes your empty site is online. Choose a light, well-supported theme and install only the plugins you really need.

Step 6: Turn on SSL

An SSL certificate encrypts the connection and gives your address the padlock in the browser. Without it, browsers warn visitors and search engines rank you lower. Many hosts include a free certificate, so just make sure it is active and that your site opens with https://. Read why every website needs an SSL certificate.

Step 7: Create a professional e-mail address

An address like [email protected] builds trust faster than a free webmail address. Create it in your control panel and connect it to your phone or webmail.

Step 8: Write and publish your first pages

Start with the pages from step 1. Write short paragraphs, use clear headings and add a contact button on every page. Compress your images before you upload them, so the site stays fast. Add a page title and a meta description for each page, because search engines show them in results.

Step 9: Check everything before you share the link

  • Open the site on a phone and on a computer.
  • Click every link and test the contact form.
  • Check the speed with a free tool.
  • Make a first backup of your files and database.

Step 10: Keep the site alive

A website is never finished. Update WordPress, the theme and the plugins every week. Add new content from time to time and look at your backups once a month. Renew the domain and the hosting on time, so the site never goes offline by accident.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to make a website?

The technical setup takes about an hour. Writing good pages takes longer, often a few days. Content is the part that brings visitors, so give it time.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. WordPress and its themes let you build pages with blocks. Code helps for special changes, but it is not needed for a normal site.

Can I make a website without buying a domain?

Some free builders give you a subdomain. It works for a test, but a real business needs its own domain to look trustworthy and to keep its address forever.
