VPS security starts the moment your server goes online. Bots scan new IP addresses within minutes, looking for weak passwords. A root server gives you full control, and also full responsibility. These ten steps give you a strong base.

VPS security checklist

  1. Update the system packages right after the first login.
  2. Create a normal user with sudo rights for daily work.
  3. Log in with SSH keys and turn off password logins.
  4. Disable direct root login over SSH.
  5. Enable a firewall and open only the ports you need.
  6. Install fail2ban to block repeated failed logins.
  7. Turn on automatic security updates.
  8. Remove services and packages you do not use.
  9. Set up off-server backups and test a restore.
  10. Monitor logs and resource usage with simple alerts.

Firewall basics

Most web servers need only ports 22, 80 and 443. Mail servers and databases add a few more. Never expose a database port to the whole internet. If an app needs remote access, allow only specific IP addresses.

Keep software current

Old software is the most common way in. Subscribe to security notices for your operating system and main apps. Schedule a short maintenance window every month. Reboot after kernel updates so the fix takes effect.

Plan for bad days

Even a careful admin can be attacked. Keep backups in another location and write down how to restore them. Add DDoS protection if your service is public and popular. With these habits, a problem becomes a short interruption instead of a disaster.

Users and permissions

Give each person their own account instead of sharing one login. Grant sudo rights only to people who need them. Remove accounts on the day someone leaves the team. Review authorised SSH keys every few months, because old keys are easy to forget.

Web application layer

Server hardening is only half the story. Keep your CMS and plugins updated, use HTTPS everywhere and limit admin pages to known IP addresses when you can. A secure server running an outdated app is still at risk.
