A website backup is the only thing that turns a disaster into an inconvenience. Plugins break, updates fail, accounts get hacked and people delete the wrong folder. Hosting providers keep copies, but you should never rely on a single one. This article gives you a plan you can set up in an afternoon.

What a website backup must include

Two things make a site: the files (themes, plugins, uploads, configuration) and the database (posts, orders, users). Back up both, together, at the same moment. A file backup from Monday and a database from Friday do not restore cleanly.

How often

  • Static or rarely edited sites: weekly.
  • Blogs and company sites: daily.
  • Shops and membership sites: hourly for the database, daily for files.

The rule is simple: how much work are you willing to redo? If losing a day of orders hurts, back up more often than once a day.

Where to keep the copies

Follow the 3-2-1 rule: three copies, on two kinds of storage, with one off-site. cPanel backups on the server are copy one. A download to your computer is copy two. Our cloud storage is a convenient off-site copy three, reachable from anywhere and separate from the hosting account.

Test the restore

A backup you have never restored is a hope, not a plan. Once a quarter, restore the latest copy to a staging subdomain and click through the site. You will discover missing files, wrong database settings or expired credentials while nothing is on fire.

Automate it

Use the backup tool in cPanel or a plugin that uploads to remote storage on a schedule. Keep at least 30 daily points and a few monthly ones. With an automated website backup in place, a hacked site becomes a ten-minute rollback instead of a lost week. Pair it with an SSL certificate and strong passwords for a complete safety net.
