All SSL certificate types encrypt traffic in the same way. The difference is how much the certificate authority checks before issuing it. That check decides what information appears in the certificate. Choosing the right level depends on your site and your visitors.
Domain Validation (DV)
A DV certificate proves that you control the domain. Validation is automatic, through e-mail, DNS or a file on the server. It is issued in minutes and costs little. Blogs, portfolios and most small sites need nothing more.
Organization Validation (OV)
An OV certificate also checks that your company exists. The authority verifies registration details and may call you. Issuance takes one to three days. The company name appears in the certificate details, which builds trust for business sites.
Extended Validation (EV)
EV is the strictest check. The authority verifies legal, physical and operational existence. Banks, payment services and large stores often choose it. Browsers no longer show a green bar, but the verified name remains in the certificate.
Comparing SSL certificate types
- Speed: DV in minutes, OV in days, EV in about a week.
- Checks: domain only, company, or full legal verification.
- Best for: blogs, business sites, or high-trust finance and retail.
- Wildcard: available to cover all subdomains of one domain.
Show your verification
Every certificate from HostiGuard comes with a public HostiGuard reference. Visitors can enter the number and see the official record of your certificate. Verified businesses can also display their company name there.

How to decide quickly
Ask yourself one question: do visitors need to know who runs this site? If not, DV is enough. If you take payments or handle personal data, OV gives more confidence. If your brand is a frequent target of phishing, consider EV. You can always upgrade at renewal time.
Remember that every type needs renewal. Turn on auto-renew so your site never shows a warning.
Wildcard and multi-domain options
A wildcard covers every subdomain, such as shop and blog. A multi-domain certificate covers different domains in one order. Both save time when you manage many names.
