Shared hosting is the starting point for most websites. One powerful server hosts many sites, and the cost is split between them. That is why a plan can cost less than a coffee per month. If you are launching a blog, a company site or a small shop, this guide explains what you get and where the limits are.
How shared hosting works
The server runs a control panel, usually cPanel, that gives every customer a private area. You get your own files, databases, e-mail accounts and SSL certificates. The operating system, security updates and backups are handled by the provider. You never touch a command line unless you want to.
Resources such as CPU and memory are pooled. Normal websites use a tiny fraction of them, so sharing is invisible most of the time. Good providers isolate accounts, so a neighbour cannot read your files.
What is included
- A one-click installer for WordPress, Joomla and dozens of other applications.
- Free SSL certificates so your site loads over HTTPS.
- E-mail accounts on your own domain, webmail and spam filtering.
- Daily backups and a file manager in the browser.
- Support that understands the platform, because every account runs the same stack.
Compare the current plans on our hosting page. Storage, bandwidth and the number of websites are the main differences between tiers.
When it is the right choice
Choose it when your site is new, traffic is moderate and you want someone else to manage the server. Portfolios, local businesses, landing pages and small WooCommerce shops run perfectly on it. Upgrading later is easy: the account is resized in place, without moving files.
When to move to a VPS
Move up when you need custom software, root access or guaranteed resources. A spike of thousands of visitors per hour, heavy database work or a video platform are typical triggers. A VPS gives you dedicated CPU and memory and full control, at a higher price and with more responsibility.
Most sites never reach that point. Start small, measure your traffic and upgrade when the numbers tell you to. Your domain, e-mail and files move with you whenever you decide.
